Swatch has created a new version of the Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission to the Sun for Spain’s total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026. Called Mission to the Sun Solar Eclipse, reference SSX01J100-1, the watch is available only in Spain and only for 24 hours on the day of the eclipse. Online purchases are limited to three watches per person.

A small change with a clear eclipse connection

This is not a completely new MoonSwatch. It uses the familiar Mission to the Sun colour scheme with a bright yellow Bioceramic case, white tachymeter bezel and white rubber strap. The gold-coloured dial has a sun-brushed finish, while white hands and hour markers keep the display easy to read. Orange hands add contrast to the chronograph seconds and the three white subdials.

The important new detail is the black chronograph pusher at two o’clock. The lower pusher remains yellow, so the dark upper button stands out immediately. It represents the Moon moving in front of the Sun during totality. I like the idea more than the size of the changes. The black pusher and new-moon battery cover are clever, but most of the watch remains the regular Mission to the Sun. The €280 price is only €5 higher than the current €275 Spanish price of the standard model. What makes it special is the timing: it can be bought only in Spain on the day a total solar eclipse crosses the country. For a MoonSwatch collector who actually experiences the eclipse, that story may matter more than another completely different colour.

The model continues the manga’s 30th-anniversary celebrations after the earlier Takumi Fujiwara AE86 watch. TAG Heuer is sending the Dutch Grand Prix off with a pair of bright orange Formula 1 Solargraph limited editions. The rubber-strap reference WBY111H.FT8128 and steel-bracelet reference WBY111L.BA0042 share the same compact case, solar movement and colour scheme, but they offer two very different ways to remember Zandvoort.

The timing is important. The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix will be the last Formula 1 race at Circuit Zandvoort under the current agreement. TAG Heuer has therefore created a farewell watch that looks straight into the orange grandstands rather than simply placing a race logo on an existing model.

The steel model is more versatile and costs very little extra, but the rubber version tells the Zandvoort story more clearly. If I were buying one specifically to remember the final Dutch Grand Prix, I would choose WBY111H.FT8128 and accept the full orange treatment.

Casio is preparing a new Pro Trek that approaches outdoor usefulness from a different direction. The PRJ-B001EX-1 does not add a compass, altimeter or barometer. Instead, it takes the familiar PRJ-B001 Hiker Line watch and gives it a reversible cloth band with its own storage pocket.

Planned for release in August 2026, the watch is a special version of Casio’s compact analogue-digital outdoor model. Casio says the design was created after studying how campers carry small essentials.

A strap with a useful secret

The wide fabric band includes a small zipped pocket beside the watch. It is intended for coins, a parking ticket or another tiny item that would otherwise disappear into a backpack. It will not replace a wallet, but it gives the wearer quick access to something small without opening a bag. This also gives the PRJ-B001EX-1 an EDC (Everyday Carry) angle, since the pocket can hold a coin, folded banknote or another small essential.

The entire band can also be reversed and folded around the watch. In this position it covers the case and mineral crystal, creating a compact pouch that protects the watch while it is not being worn. A carabiner can be attached to the strap so the PRJ-B001EX-1 can hang from a backpack, belt loop or the inside of a tent.

On the wrist it works like a regular Pro Trek. Off the wrist it becomes a small storage pouch with a watch attached. The black ripstop-style fabric and white stitching also suit the outdoor theme.

Compact by Pro Trek standards

The PRJ-B001EX-1 measures 50.3mm from top to bottom, 46mm across and 13.6mm thick. Those numbers are not small in normal watch terms, but the 51-gram weight should make it comfortable for hiking or daily use. The fabric band fits wrists from 145mm to 215mm.

Casio uses resin and bio-based resin for the case and bezel. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres and the watch can operate at temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius. The dial has large white markers, Neobrite luminous material and two digital displays. A double LED system lights both the dial and LCD screens in the dark.

The rotating bezel serves as Casio’s Rotary Guard. In its normal position it helps cover the buttons and reduces accidental presses. Turn it 45 degrees and the buttons become easier to use. It is a simple mechanical solution that makes sense when the watch is worn under a jacket cuff or used with outdoor clothing.

Solar power and Bluetooth timekeeping

Tough Solar charging is one of the strongest practical features. A full charge provides about seven months of normal operation without further light exposure. With power saving active, that figure can reach approximately 18 months. It is a better fit for an outdoor watch than relying on frequent charging.

Bluetooth links the watch to the Casio Watches app. The connection provides automatic time adjustment, simple watch settings, phone finder and access to around 300 world-time cities. The Time & Place function lets the wearer save the current time and location in the app, which can be useful for marking a campsite, viewpoint or other point on a trip.

Plenty of everyday functions

The watch offers world time across 38 cities and 38 time zones, plus UTC. It has a 1/100-second stopwatch for the first hour, a 60-minute countdown timer, five daily alarms and an hourly signal. Other details include a full automatic calendar, 12 or 24-hour display, button sound control and a hand-shift function.

The day display supports English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Russian. If the watch is not connected to a phone, its stated accuracy is within 15 seconds per month.

Price and availability

Casio lists the PRJ-B001EX-1 for an August 2026 release in Japan at ¥33,000 including tax. That is roughly $220, €190 or £165 at current exchange rates. These figures are currency conversions rather than confirmed prices for the United States, Europe or the United Kingdom.

Conclusion

Casio has not tried to turn the PRJ-B001EX-1 into a larger or more complicated instrument. It remains light, solar powered and easy to read. The reversible band adds protection and a small amount of storage.

The pocket will be useful only for very small items and some owners may prefer a normal strap for daily wear. Even so, it gives this version a clear purpose and makes it more than a simple new colour. For campers, hikers or anyone who likes to clip a watch to a backpack, this is one of Casio’s more original Pro Trek ideas.

The new F-91WF collection keeps that familiar formula but changes the part that has the greatest effect on comfort and character: the strap. Instead of the usual resin band, each watch comes with a lightweight cloth strap made from recycled PET.

There are three models in the collection. The F-91WF-1A is black, the F-91WF-2A is navy blue and the F-91WF-3A is olive green. Accuracy is rated at plus or minus 30 seconds per month, which is completely acceptable for a simple quartz digital watch.

The 1/100-second stopwatch is still one of the coolest features. It can measure elapsed time, split time and first and second-place finishes up to 59 minutes and 59.99 seconds. There is also a daily alarm and an hourly time signal. These are basic functions by modern smartwatch standards but they are quick to reach and do not need an app, an account or a charger.

A green LED illuminates the display in the dark. Power comes from one CR2016 battery with an estimated life of about seven years. That long battery life is one of the great advantages of this watch. You can put it on and use it without thinking about charging or changing the battery.

What you should know before buying

The case and bezel are resin and the crystal is resin glass. That keeps the weight low but the front can collect scratches more easily than mineral glass or sapphire. Casio lists the watches simply as water resistant. They are suitable for normal daily splashes but this is not a diving watch and it should not be treated like one.

Those limits are part of the F-91W formula. You are not paying for premium materials, advanced sensors or phone connectivity. You are buying a clear display, useful timing functions, a seven-year battery and a watch light enough to forget on your wrist. The new strap makes that package more comfortable and gives buyers three styles without spoiling the original design.

Price and release

The F-91WF collection is scheduled for an August 2026 launch. Official regional prices have not been announced yet but the watches are expected to cost around $50, €43 or £37. Final prices may vary slightly between countries because of taxes and regional distribution.

Conclusion

The F-91WF does not try to modernise the F-91W with unnecessary technology. It keeps the tiny resin case, simple display, useful stopwatch and excellent battery life then adds a cloth strap that should be comfortable from the first day. That is a small update but it is the right one for a watch built around simplicity.

My first choice is the olive-green F-91WF-3A. The green case and strap give this familiar design the most character and make the fabric version feel properly different. After the green model I would choose the black F-91WF-1A because it keeps the classic look and will be the easiest to wear every day. The navy F-91WF-2A remains a good third option for anyone who wants colour without going all the way to green.

Timex has taken the 1976 Lexington Reissue Inspired in the direction I wanted most: away from gold tone and into polished steel. The new TW2Y88200 keeps the compact rectangular shape, vertically brushed silver dial and Roman numerals of the earlier model, then adds metallic blue hands for a little contrast. It is currently listed as a $149 pre-order in the United States, which puts it firmly in the part of the market where a good design matters more than a prestigious logo.

A rectangular watch with the right instincts

I am a fan of rectangular watches because they make even a simple time-only watch feel considered. A round case can hide lazy proportions. A rectangle cannot. Every line is visible: the width, the length, the dial margins, the shape of the numerals and the relationship between case and strap. That is why the Cartier Tank remains such a powerful reference point, and why an affordable watch needs more than Roman numerals to feel convincing.

This Timex is not trying to be a counterfeit Tank. It earns its place as a nice alternative because it uses the same broad language of a slim rectangular case, an orderly dial and a leather strap, then keeps a personality of its own. The 36mm length gives it enough vertical presence, while the 21mm width keeps the whole watch elegant rather than bulky. On my 6.5-inch wrist, I would expect the dimensions to sit neatly inside the wrist rather than stretch across it. That is exactly the point of a watch like this.

Timex uses polished stainless steel rather than a plated finish, which makes this version more versatile than a gold-tone dress watch. Steel works with a white shirt and tailored jacket, but it also works with knitwear or a plain T-shirt without looking like you borrowed something from a costume department. The raised mineral crystal adds a softly curved profile above the case. Sapphire would be welcome, of course, but at $149 the mineral glass is a fair compromise if the rest of the watch is as well judged as it appears.

The blue hands make the dial

The dial is silver tone with vertical brushing, elongated Roman numerals and a railway minute track. None of those ingredients is new, but the blue hands are the detail that saves the watch from becoming too literal. They add a cool flash against the brushed surface and give the time display a little more depth. The layout is still quiet, which matters on a rectangular dial: too much text or too many scales would crowd the narrow width very quickly.

There is no seconds hand, just hours and minutes. That choice suits the Lexington. A steady seconds hand would add animation, but it would also introduce a visual line that this design does not need. The uncluttered display lets the shape, brushing and numerals do the work. It is a small lesson in restraint from a brand that is often at its best when it stops trying to make an affordable watch look expensive and simply makes it look right.

Quartz is exactly the right answer here

Inside is a quartz analogue movement. That means battery power, accurate everyday timing and very little fuss, which is hard to argue with on a slim dress watch. A mechanical movement would turn the Lexington into a different proposition: thicker, dearer and probably less convincing at this price. Quartz also makes the watch easy to pick up after a week in the drawer without resetting it, which is useful when a rectangular piece is one part of a wider rotation rather than the only watch you own.

The brown crocodile-grain leather strap has an 18mm width, a regular buckle and quick-release spring bars. Timex says the leather is sourced from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries. The quick-release system is more important than it sounds. With a 21mm steel case, this watch should look good on dark brown, black, navy or even a textured grey strap, and changing the strap should not require a tool or a trip to a shop. The 30m water-resistance rating is only for hand-washing and accidental splashes, not swimming, which is completely normal for this kind of watch.

A good alternative, not a substitute

The name “1976 Lexington Reissue Inspired” is rather clumsy, especially because Timex already has a Lexington Reissue in its catalogue. Still, the watch itself is clearer than its name. It gives you polished steel, a properly slim rectangular form, a pleasing dial and a useful strap system for $149. It will not replicate the finishing, history or jewellery-like presence of a Cartier Tank, and pretending otherwise would miss the point. The attraction is that it delivers a familiar elegance without asking you to treat it like an investment.

As of its August 6, 2026 announcement, the steel Lexington is listed by Timex as a pre-order. That status may change quickly, especially because the earlier gold-tone version drew interest, but there is no limited-edition numbering attached to this model. My conclusion is simple: if you love rectangular watches and want a Tank-adjacent design that can be worn often and strapped differently without anxiety, the new steel Lexington is one of Timex’s most appealing recent releases. It is inexpensive in the useful sense of the word, not the apologetic one.

Seiko’s 145th-anniversary Edo Purple collection is not one watch in a new colour. It is five very different watches using the same dark violet palette and gold-coloured details: the Astron HAB011, Alpinist HBC006, Speedtimer HBJ005, Presage HCB006 and Seiko 5 Sports HDB003. All are limited editions scheduled for October 2026.

Edo purple, five ways

Edo purple is a traditional Japanese colour associated with historic Tokyo, once called Edo. Here, Seiko uses it with more restraint than the name “purple anniversary” might suggest. Dials shift between violet and near-black, while the gold-coloured accents give every model some warmth without making them look like birthday decorations.

Astron HAB011: the technical flagship

The HAB011 is the outlier because its 5X83 GPS Solar calibre receives time and time-zone information from satellites. It combines dual time, a 1/20-second chronograph, a perpetual calendar and 38-city world time in a 43.3mm titanium case. The ceramic-and-titanium bezel and dual-curved sapphire crystal help it look properly finished rather than merely busy. It is limited to 2,000 pieces worldwide. Seiko has confirmed Japanese pricing, but no U.S. price yet.

Alpinist HBC006: compact and capable

At 39.5mm wide, 46.4mm lug to lug and 12.7mm thick, the Alpinist is the smallest mechanical model here. The purple stitching on its black leather strap is a quiet touch, while the internal compass ring and two crowns keep the familiar Alpinist character. Its 6R55 automatic movement runs for 72 hours, and the 20-bar water resistance, sapphire crystal and inner anti-reflective coating make this the one I would worry least about on a rainy day. It is limited to 7,000 pieces.

Speedtimer HBJ005: the chronograph deserves its own chapter

The HBJ005 is not a small add-on to this collection. It is a Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph with a completely different character from the Alpinist or Presage: steel bracelet, tachymeter bezel, proper pushers and three black sub-dials. The pale purple dial could have been a gimmick, but the black bezel and sub-dials keep it focused.

The V192 solar calibre runs the chronograph, 24-hour hand and power-reserve indicator, so daylight powers it instead of a disposable battery. At 41.4mm wide and 13mm thick, it has more presence than the Alpinist but it is not enormous. A curved sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating and 10-bar water resistance give it the practical details a Speedtimer needs.

The purple changes from a soft, almost silvery lavender to a stronger violet around the edge, while the gold-coloured hands prevent the black sub-dials from taking over. It is limited to 8,000 pieces and is priced at $750 in the United States. That makes it the practical surprise of the collection: a proper solar chronograph rather than a purple dial pasted onto a familiar case.

Presage HCB006: a cocktail with a GMT hand

The Presage HCB006 is inspired by the “Edo Purple” cocktail created by Hisashi Kishi of Tokyo’s STAR BAR. Its 4R34 automatic GMT movement gives the 40.5mm watch a second time zone, date and 41-hour power reserve. The purple radial dial, gold-coloured flecks and long GMT hand make the connection clear without making it feel like a drink menu on the wrist. This is the most polished watch of the group, though the box-shaped Hardlex crystal and 5-bar water resistance are less robust than the Alpinist or Speedtimer. It is limited to 6,000 and costs $625 in the U.S.

Seiko 5 Sports HDB003: the tougher purple option

The HDB003 puts the anniversary dial in the 42.5mm Seiko 5 Sports SKX case. Its black bezel, tall rectangular indexes and steel bracelet make it the more traditionally masculine choice, but the purple dial stops it becoming too severe. The 4R36 automatic calibre has day-date display, hand-winding, stop seconds and around 41 hours of power reserve. With 10-bar water resistance and a curved Hardlex crystal, it is the most casual option here. It is limited to 9,999 pieces and priced at $450 in the U.S.

Conclusion

The Alpinist is still my favourite. It has the best balance of size, 72-hour movement, 20-bar water resistance and sapphire crystal, with a design that does not depend on the anniversary colour to work. The Presage comes second because its cocktail story genuinely suits the dial and the GMT is useful. The Speedtimer is the practical choice for someone who wants a solar chronograph with sapphire and a proper tachymeter. The Astron is the full technical statement, with satellite timekeeping and titanium, but its 43.3mm case makes it the most specialised piece here. The Seiko 5 Sports is more masculine, but it looks good as well and remains the easy entry point at $450. Seiko has made purple feel like a shared idea here, not a copied paint job.

Most surf watches stop after telling you when the tide is coming in. The new G-Shock G-LIDE GBX-H5600KI-5 also checks your heart, studies your sleep and expects you to catch the next wave.

Casio has released its fourth signature watch with Japanese professional surfer Kanoa Igarashi. The GBX-H5600KI-5 is based on the heart-rate-equipped G-LIDE GBX-H5600, but its brown marbled body and soft purple details give it a look that is easy to separate from the standard models.

A colour scheme inspired by Portugal

The mixed brown colour is inspired by the cliffs and rocky coast around Ericeira, Portugal, one of Igarashi’s training bases. Casio mixes different colours of bio-based resin during production, so the streaks and marks will not be identical on every watch. That gives each example a slightly different surface pattern without pretending that the watch is hand-finished.

The lavender details are a smart contrast to the dark case. A purple vapor-deposited finish around the display is meant to recall the sea during the early morning and evening magic hours. Igarashi’s signature sits below the screen and also appears on the back. His World Surf League competition number, 50, is printed on the lower part of the band.

Built for the water, but useful away from it

The case measures 51.1mm long, 44.5mm wide and 17.3mm thick. That is a large watch on paper, although 47 grams is impressively light for a G-Shock with an optical heart-rate sensor. The carbon-fibre-reinforced resin back helps keep the weight down. The bio-based resin band fits wrists from 145mm to 215mm, while shock resistance and 200 metres of water resistance make the watch suitable for serious time in the sea.

The Memory in Pixel LCD is clear and can show a large tide graph directly on the watch. There are 50 preset tide locations, with around 3,300 points available through the Casio Watches app. Moon data, sunrise and sunset times are also included. The glass is mineral rather than sapphire, which is common for this type of G-Shock but worth knowing before buying.

Heart rate, training and sleep data

An optical sensor measures heart rate from 30 to 220 beats per minute. The watch also has an accelerometer for steps, distance, speed and pace. Running, walking and multi-sport modes support automatic or manual laps plus auto pause. Up to 100 runs can be stored, with as many as 200 lap records for each activity.

Casio uses Polar algorithms to turn that information into training, recovery and sleep analysis. Sleep score, breathing exercises and blood oxygen readings are part of the package, although the blood oxygen function is not a medical device. Four daily alarms, a smart alarm with vibration, a 60-minute timer and a stopwatch that runs up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds cover the normal digital-watch jobs.

Bluetooth links the GBX-H5600KI-5 to the Casio Watches app. The connection provides automatic time correction, about 300 world-time cities, phone notifications, activity logs, sleep records, phone finder and smartphone GPS correction for more accurate distance measurements.

Solar assistance with USB charging

This is not a conventional Tough Solar model that can run every feature indefinitely from room light. The main battery is charged with the supplied USB cable, while solar power helps extend the time between charges. Casio quotes about 35 hours when the heart-rate sensor is used continuously for activity tracking, around one month in normal watch mode with heart rate turned off and up to 11 months with power saving enabled.

Other practical details include a full-auto white LED backlight, 38 watch-based world-time cities plus UTC, a full automatic calendar through 2099, 12 or 24-hour display and airplane mode. Accuracy is rated at plus or minus 15 seconds per month when the watch is not connected to a phone.

Price and availability

The G-Shock G-LIDE GBX-H5600KI-5 was announced on 21 July 2026 and reached stores in Singapore on 31 July. Official prices include SGD499 in Singapore and ¥50,600 in Japan. Based on current exchange rates, the Singapore price is approximately $387, €340 or £290. These are conversions rather than confirmed prices for the United States, the euro zone or the United Kingdom.

Conclusion

I like that Casio did more than change the colours for this collaboration. The marbled resin connects directly to Igarashi’s time in Portugal, while the purple accents stop the brown case from looking dull. More importantly, the tide data, heart-rate sensor, sleep tracking and light 47-gram construction make sense for an athlete who spends much of his life in the water. It is a focused G-LIDE with a strong design, not just a name printed on the box.

Seiko has turned one of Honda’s strangest ideas into a watch. The new Seiko 5 Sports Honda Motocompo Limited Edition HDB010 takes the colours and small details of the folding 1980s scooter then places them inside a compact automatic field watch.

This is more than a yellow dial with two famous logos. The crown copies a label from the scooter’s fuel control, the strap borrows its loading instructions and the box looks like the carton used to ship the Motocompo. Even the caseback has been turned into a bright red display for the 4R36 movement.

A 45-year-old scooter becomes a watch

Honda introduced the Motocompo in 1981 alongside the first Honda City. It was a 49cc two-stroke motorcycle created to fit inside the City’s luggage area. The handlebars and footrests folded into its rectangular body, while special systems helped prevent fuel, oil or battery fluid from leaking inside the car. Honda described the idea as a new six-wheel lifestyle, combining a small car with a motorcycle that could be carried in its trunk.

The scooter weighed 42kg dry, produced 2.5 horsepower and measured only 1.185 metres long. Its small wheels and box-like panels made it instantly recognisable. Production lasted from 1981 until 1983, yet the Motocompo continued to gain fans long after it disappeared from showrooms. The HDB010 arrives for its 45th anniversary and uses the yellow version of the scooter as its main source of inspiration.

A compact Field Series case in Motocompo colours

The HDB010 belongs to the Seiko 5 Sports Field Series. Its stainless steel case has a black hard coating and measures 36.4mm across, 12.5mm thick and 44.4mm from lug to lug. Those proportions are smaller than many modern Seiko 5 models and suit the compact subject of the collaboration. An 18mm strap also keeps the design narrow and balanced.

A curved Hardlex crystal protects the dial. Hardlex is Seiko’s hardened mineral glass, so it offers better impact resistance than common mineral glass but it is not as resistant to scratches as sapphire. Water resistance is 10 bar, equal to 100 metres, while magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m. LumiBrite appears on the hands and hour markers.

The dial is where the Motocompo connection becomes impossible to miss. Bright yellow fills most of the surface, with a dark grey bar running through the centre and the Honda name printed across it. Large black Arabic numerals keep the field-watch layout easy to read. A black day and date display sits at three o’clock, while the grey hour and minute hands contain broad areas of lume.

The word “Automatic” above six o’clock uses a block-style design based on the Motocompo logo. Small coloured squares inside the lettering add blue, yellow and red details. A red arrow-shaped tip on the seconds hand provides another small flash of colour without making the dial harder to read.

The best references are found in the small details

Seiko did not stop at the dial. The black crown carries the word “TURN,” copied from the scooter’s fuel control. The grey nylon strap has black hardware marked “CARRYING POINT,” a reference to the places used to secure the folded motorcycle inside the car. “INSERTION POINT” appears at the tip of the strap. These words could look random without the history, but they make sense once the Motocompo’s original purpose is understood.

The back is even more dramatic. A red-tinted window shows the movement below a silver Motocompo silhouette and a large Honda logo. The outer ring states that this is a limited edition and carries the individual serial number. It also confirms the 10-bar water-resistance rating. The result is busy, but a quiet caseback would not have matched the rest of this watch.

A familiar Seiko 4R36 automatic movement

Inside is Seiko’s 4R36, a practical automatic movement used across many Seiko 5 watches. It can also be wound by hand and the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled out, helping the owner set the time more accurately. The movement has 24 jewels, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers approximately 41 hours of power reserve.

Its day and date functions are visible through the black display at three o’clock. Seiko’s official accuracy range for the 4R36 is +45 to -35 seconds per day when worn under the stated temperature conditions. That range is much wider than a chronometer specification, but the 4R36 is well known for its simple construction, useful features and wide service support. It is a suitable choice for a Seiko 5 that is meant to be worn regularly.

The shipping box becomes part of the package

The special presentation deserves attention because it completes the idea. The outer brown box is printed to resemble the corrugated carton once used to ship the Honda Motocompo. A large black drawing of the scooter covers the front and the original Japanese Motocompo name appears near the bottom. Inside is a bright yellow watch box with a black insert.

Many collaboration watches arrive in oversized packaging that has little connection to the product. This one uses the box to explain part of the story. It looks like something from a Honda parts department in 1981, which is exactly the right approach for such an unusual subject.

Price, release date and production

Seiko will release the HDB010 in September 2026. Production is limited to 8,000 watches worldwide and each example receives its own number on the caseback. The official price is £340 in the United Kingdom and €390 in Germany. Seiko’s United States page does not list a price at the time of writing. The British price converts to approximately $450, which is a useful guide rather than a confirmed US retail price.

The main international reference is HDB010, while the complete product code shown on Seiko’s image files and some regional listings is HDB010K1. Buyers searching for the watch may see either version. Availability may also differ by country because the September release is being handled through regional Seiko sites and retailers.

Conclusion

The HDB010 works because the Motocompo details have a purpose. The yellow dial gives it immediate energy, but the crown text, strap markings, red caseback and shipping-carton box make the collaboration more than a colour change. The 36.4mm case is also a welcome choice for anyone who finds many modern automatic watches too large.

I would recommend it to Seiko collectors, Honda fans and anyone who wants a small automatic watch that does not look serious. A run of 8,000 pieces is not extremely limited, yet the design is unusual enough to stand apart from a standard Seiko 5. At about $450, €390 or £340, the buyer is paying extra for the Honda connection and special packaging. In this case, there are enough carefully chosen details to justify that difference for the right person.

Casio has officially introduced Master in Horizon Gold, a three-watch G-Shock collection that gives the Gravitymaster, Mudmaster and Mudman the same brown and light-gold finish. The models are the GR-B300H-5A, GG-B100XMH-5A and GW-9500MH-5. They look related, but their functions are very different. One is made for flying, one for connected outdoor tracking and one for solar-powered navigation without a phone.

One Colour Scheme, Three Different G-Shocks

The collection takes its name from the line where the earth appears to meet the sky. Dark brown bio-based resin bands and cases are combined with light yellow-gold ion-plated bezels. Smaller metal parts use brown ion plating and the warm colour scheme looks unusual without hiding the tough Master of G character. Every model is shock resistant and rated to 200 metres.

Mudmaster GG-B100XMH-5A

The GG-B100XMH-5A measures 55.4 x 51.3 x 19.4 mm and weighs 104 g. Its bio-based carbon case uses the Carbon Core Guard structure, while a stainless-steel bezel and reinforced case back add protection. Mud resistance, mineral glass and a two-year CR2025 battery make it the only non-solar model in the trio.

It combines a compass, altimeter, barometer and thermometer with a step counter. Bluetooth links it to the Casio Watches app for automatic time correction, around 300 world-time cities, Mission Log, Location Memory and phone finder. Other tools include sunrise and sunset data, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a 24-hour timer, five alarms and double LED lighting.

Mudman GW-9500MH-5

The GW-9500MH-5 is thinner and lighter at 56.7 x 52.7 x 14.8 mm and 88 g. It has a bio-based carbon case, stainless-steel bezel, mud resistance and mineral glass. Its two-layer LCD keeps the compass graphics separate from the main time and sensor information.

This model replaces Bluetooth with Tough Solar and Multiband 6 radio time correction. Its triple sensor measures direction, altitude, barometric pressure and temperature. The watch also has 31 time zones, sunrise and sunset times, a 1/10-second stopwatch, five alarms and Super Illuminator. A full charge runs for about six months without light or 26 months with power saving.

Gravitymaster GR-B300H-5A

The GR-B300H-5A is the largest by measurement but the lightest at 59 x 54.7 x 15.7 mm and 71 g. It uses Carbon Core Guard, a screw-lock crown, mineral glass and a bio-based resin band. Tough Solar powers the fully analogue display.

Bluetooth provides automatic time correction, easy settings, around 300 world-time cities, flight log and phone finder. Dual time displays two cities together. The rotary disc at 9 o’clock shows alarm status, works with the stopwatch and indicates the battery level. A full charge provides about five months of normal use or 18 months with power saving.

Prices and My Choice

Confirmed Japanese prices are ¥60,500 for the GG-B100XMH-5A, ¥63,800 for the GW-9500MH-5 and ¥49,500 for the GR-B300H-5A. Recent exchange rates put them at roughly $370, €325 or £278 for the Mudmaster, $390, €342 or £293 for the Mudman and $303, €266 or £227 for the Gravitymaster. These are conversions rather than confirmed regional retail prices.

I already own a Gravitymaster, so the GR-B300H-5A is the watch that catches my attention first. It is also the lightest and least expensive model here. At 54.7 mm wide it is undeniably large, but an eight-inch wrist gives it enough room. The Mudman remains the practical choice for anyone who wants solar power, radio time correction and outdoor sensors without depending on a phone.

Casio has listed the F-B100W, a three-watch family that adds Bluetooth and step tracking to its uncomplicated digital formula. Japanese retailers opened preorders at ¥8,800 including tax, with release scheduled for August 2026. Prices for Europe, the UK and the US remain unannounced; the passport stamps are still pending.

That is the whole idea in one image: a familiar rectangular Casio that can correct its time through a phone and count your steps. The F-B100W-1AJF makes the clearest introduction, with a black resin case, positive LCD and blue, red and gold labels. The small step indicator above the time is the clue that this is not simply another colour of an old watch.

The F-91W connection is official

Casio says the front and strap design inherit the look of the F-91W, introduced in 1989. The new case measures 41.9 × 38.1 × 8.8mm and weighs 26g. An F-91W is 38.2 × 35.2 × 8.5mm and 21g, so the newcomer is larger, but only just.

On my 6.5-inch wrist, the dimensions suggest an easy, compact fit, although I have not handled one yet. The resin case, resin glass and 145–215mm strap range keep the specification familiar. The main resin parts of the band use biomass plastic, which is a quiet modern touch rather than a lecture printed on the dial.

Three colours, two screen personalities

The F-B100W-1BJF keeps the black case but adds grey markings and a negative display. It is not a more advanced model; it is simply the quieter sibling, for anyone who wants the LCD to whisper.

The F-B100W-3AJF moves in the opposite direction with muted sage-green resin, cool blue details and a positive display. The softer colour gives the square case a less technical look. The trio now covers weekday, midnight and houseplant without changing a single function.

Smarter, without becoming needy

An accelerometer counts up to 999,999 steps, while the daily target can be set from 1,000 to 50,000. The watch shows recent hourly progress and can remind you when you have been sitting still for too long. It does not measure heart rate, map runs with GPS or display phone notifications. Frankly, a watch that refuses to forward email may be the healthiest feature here.

Bluetooth connects it to the CASIO WATCHES app for automatic time correction, settings, life-log data, Time & Place records and phone finding. World time covers roughly 300 cities through the app. Away from the phone, the F-B100W is still a capable digital watch: dual time, five alarms, an hourly signal, a 60-minute timer, amber LED lighting and a stopwatch with storage for up to 200 lap or split records.

Casio estimates about two years from the battery, versus seven years for the simpler F-91W. That is the clearest trade-off for the extra sensors and radio. Without a smartphone connection, stated accuracy is ±15 seconds per month. Water resistance is described only as suitable for everyday use, with no metre or ATM rating, so this is a step counter, not a swimming coach.

The interface remains reassuringly old-fashioned: four physical pushers, a segmented LCD and no touchscreen gymnastics. A small upper graph shows step activity across the most recent seven hours, while the main display keeps the time easy to find. There is also a full automatic calendar, button-tone mute, low-battery warning and power-saving mode. These sound like minor comforts, but together they make the F-B100W feel more like a genuinely upgraded watch than a cheap activity band wearing retro clothes.

Price and availability

At ¥8,800, the F-B100W costs more than the bare-bones F-91W, as expected, but remains comfortably below most full smartwatches. All three references share the same price. The combination of a featherweight case, real buttons, useful fitness basics and no attention-hungry screen feels sensible. Casio has not reinvented its most recognisable digital shape; it has simply taught it to count steps and speak Bluetooth, then had the good manners to keep it quiet.

If you search for watch recommendations in 2026, you will inevitably run into a very annoying trend: watch influencers making “best watches under $1,000” lists of affordable watches that they have never even touched. They show stock photos or videos, they clearly do not own them and they have absolutely no intention of buying them, especially when their own personal collections are full of expensive pieces.

At one point recently, I watched a video where an influencer actually recommended an affordable watch in a list and then immediately admitted that she/he didn’t even like it. I mean, seriously?

My approach is going to be the exact opposite and I think a lot more realistic. Instead of pretending to love budget watches I do not own or like, I am going to look at the “best” expensive luxury watches and not necessarily hyped watches, but watches under $100,000 that I do not have the money to buy. But here is the catch: even if I had the cash sitting in my bank account tomorrow, I still would not buy them, just to follow the dumb trend!

1. Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch

The Moonwatch is a legend. It went to the moon. It has the best history of any chronograph, period. The latest Master Chronometer update is brilliant. In fact, if there is one watch on this entire list that I truly recommend, it is this one. Part of its charm is that because of the unique subdial layout and movement architecture, there are no good fakes that can accurately reproduce the proper subdial spacing.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: Full disclosure: I already own an Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. As much as I would love to add the classic silver and steel bracelet Moonwatch to the collection, my budget unfortunately cannot handle a second Speedmaster.

The Affordable Alternative: Whenever I want that classic steel space-exploration look and history without breaking the bank, I turn to the Bulova Lunar Pilot. It shares an incredible space heritage, a fantastic design and high accuracy. Down below, here is a shot of my Bulova from Insta.

2. Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner is the undisputed king of dive watches. Its classic design is so iconic that it has served as the blueprint for almost every diver created over the last 70 years. It is perfectly proportioned, incredibly robust and looks just as good in a wetsuit as it does with a tailored shirt.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: Okay, I would actually buy if an Authorized Dealer magically called me right now and offered it at retail. But since that is not going to happen, I am going to happily settle down with my alternative.

The Affordable Alternative: Fortunately, I have something that calms me down every time I get the urge to chase a Submariner: my Longines HydroConquest Automatic (Ref. L3.642.4.56.6). Longines has an incredible watchmaking history of its own and this specific HydroConquest offers phenomenal Swiss build quality, a reliable automatic movement and a handsome dial with those bold crown guards. 3. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

The Royal Oak is an absolute masterpiece of horological history. Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta in 1972, it single-handedly created the luxury integrated-bracelet sports watch category. The iconic octagonal bezel, the exposed screws and that mesmerizing tapisserie dial are genuinely stunning and the way the brushed steel bracelet catches the light is a true work of art.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: To be completely honest, it is just far too expensive for my budget. Even if I somehow had the disposable income to comfortably drop $30,000 to $50,000 on an AP, I know my own wearing habits. The Royal Oak’s beauty relies on those crisp, sharp transitions and highly polished chamfers, I would be absolutely terrified to wear it.

The Affordable Alternative: I actually own the perfect solution to this. I took two of my Casio G-Shocks, specifically the GA-2110ET-2A and the GA-2110ET-8A and completely transformed them using 3rd Gen Full Metal “CasiOak” mod kits. One is entirely silver and the other is silver with a black bezel. They give you that exact same geometric, integrated-bracelet Royal Oak aesthetic, but they are built like absolute tanks. I can bang my metal CasiOaks into door frames all day without shedding a single tear. For me these are great options and fun watches to have as an alternative. 4. Panerai Luminor

Panerai makes some of the most recognizable watches in the world. The bold cushion-shaped case, sandwich dial layout and massive patented crown-guard bridge give it an unmistakable presence on the wrist. It has a rich military diving history and unmistakable style.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: While I can appreciate the iconic aesthetic from afar, a Panerai is way out of my budget, especially since I got lucky and found an amazing alternative that scratches the exact same itch.

The Affordable Alternative: I get that bold Panerai look with my Citizen Signature Grand Touring Automatic (NB0070-06E). They are a bit hard to find these days, but if you can hunt one down, it is totally worth the price. It features a great movement, a gorgeous domed AR-coated sapphire crystal and that fantastic cushion case and crown guard design. Down below, here is a shot of my Citizen from Instagram!

5. Hublot Big Bang

Hublot is easily one of the most polarizing brands in modern horology. Love it or hate it, the Big Bang completely disrupted the luxury sports watch market with its “Art of Fusion” concept. It is brash, bold and unapologetic, mixing materials like ceramic, gold, titanium and rubber in a chunky, industrial case with signature visible bezel screws.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: Unlike many collectors who hate the design, I actually really like how it looks. However, a Hublot is way out of my budget, but because I like it, I bought a G-Shock that has a similar vibe.

The Affordable Alternative: Yes, a Casio G-Shock G-Steel Bluetooth Tough Solar (GST-B100-1A) is the perfect Hublot alternative. It gives you that same massive, angular steel case construction, a comfortable black resin strap, prominent bezel screws and a multi-layered mechanical-looking dial featuring a very cool turbine battery indicator. 6. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore

If the original Royal Oak is a sleek sports car, the Offshore is a lifted 4×4. It took Gérald Genta’s iconic design and bulked it up, adding a massive case, prominent chronograph pushers, aggressive crown guards and rubber accents. It is loud, unapologetically heavy and essentially created the market for the oversized, ultra-luxury sports chronograph.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: While a lot of traditionalists complain about its massive proportions, I actually really like the aggressive, over-engineered aesthetic. That’s why I bought a Certina that looks similar.

The Affordable Alternative: When I want that massive, angular, industrial chronograph presence, I wear my Certina DS Eagle Chronograph Automatic (C023.727.27.051.00). With its 46mm case, textured rubber strap and screwed-down bezel details, it completely nails the oversized, aggressive sports watch vibe. Plus, you get a genuine Swiss automatic chronograph movement inside for a fraction of the cost. Down below, here is a shot of my Certina from Instagram.

7. IWC Big Pilot’s Watch 43

IWC has an undeniable pedigree when it comes to aviation watches and the Big Pilot is perhaps their most recognizable creation. Originating from the oversized “B-Uhr” observation watches of the 1940s, it was designed for maximum legibility in the cockpit. The Big Pilot 43 takes that legendary DNA, the massive diamond-shaped onion crown, the pristine, ultra-legible dial with its signature triangle at 12 o’clock and impeccable case finishing and shrinks it down just enough to be wearable for those of us who do not actually fly bombers for a living.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: The Big Pilot 43 is undeniably gorgeous and incredibly well-made, but I own a TAG Heuer Autavia Calibre 5 COSC (WBE5116.EB0173), which is a fantastic pilot’s watch in its own right with genuine history behind it. So between my budget and my Autavia, an IWC is out of the budget.

The Affordable Alternative: If you want that clean, legible pilot watch aesthetic but cannot swing an IWC (or an Autavia, for that matter), the Citizen Garrison (BM8560) is my go-to recommendation. It nails the classic aviator look with a highly legible dial, bold numerals and a comfortable leather strap. Instead of a luxury price tag, you get a lightweight 42mm Super Titanium case, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and Citizen’s brilliant Eco-Drive movement that runs endlessly on light. 8. TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph

The TAG Heuer Monaco is an absolute legend in the world of motorsport. Introduced in 1969, it made waves as one of the very first automatic chronographs and broke all the rules with its bold square case. 9. Zenith Chronomaster Revival El Primero A384

The Zenith El Primero holds a legendary spot in watchmaking history as one of the very first automatic chronographs released in 1969. The Chronomaster Revival A384 brings back that exact vintage charm. With its distinctive faceted tonneau case and a perfectly proportioned dial, it is an absolute stunner that pays great respect to its heritage.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: In my opinion, the A384 is quite frankly one of the prettiest watch designs and panda dials ever created. I absolutely love the look, but my budget pointed me in a different direction. I wanted to enjoy that exact retro style on my wrist, which is why I sought out a great alternative.

The Affordable Alternative: My Casio Edifice EFB-730L-7AV scratches that vintage panda chronograph itch perfectly. It delivers a beautifully balanced white dial with black sub-dials and a sleek, sporty case that punches way above its price tag. 10. Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Date

Jaeger-LeCoultre is often referred to as the watchmaker of watchmakers for a very good reason. The Master Ultra Thin Date is a true masterclass in minimalist design. It offers an incredibly slim case profile, a refined dial and a beautifully finished in-house movement. It represents the absolute peak of quiet luxury and serves as the quintessential dress watch.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: I am simply too big of a Bruce Willis fan and bought a Hamilton instead. Plus, not buying the JLC made my budget Die Hard!

The Affordable Alternative: My Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic (reference H32715531) is the perfect solution. Fun fact about this specific model: it is the exact watch worn by Bruce Willis in A Good Day to Die Hard! It brings a sleek black dial, a robust automatic movement and a classic leather strap. 10.5. Cartier Tank Louis Cartier

The Cartier Tank is an absolute masterclass in timeless design. Created in 1917, its rectangular shape was inspired by the tracks of military vehicles from that era. Over a century later, it remains a symbol of pure elegance. With its Roman numeral dial, blue steel hands and that signature sapphire cabochon crown, the Tank Louis Cartier is a true icon worn by royalty, artists and celebrities alike.

Why I wouldn’t buy it: I personally do not wear Cartier watches and probably will never wear, that’s why it’s my 0.5 (half) recommendation here but I am speaking on behalf of my wife for this one. She loves that classic Art Deco aesthetic but recommended her Seiko to save my budget.

Casio has expanded its Oceanus Retro Tone Collection with two Japan-only limited editions for August 2026: the Manta S400 OCW-S400RL-8AJR and Classic Line OCW-T2600RL-3AJR. Both use lightweight titanium cases, solar power, radio-controlled timekeeping and Tochigi leather straps. The idea is simple: modern Casio technology presented with warmer colours and a more traditional character.

A Softer Retro Tone Look

Both watches use half-matte gradient dials that change gently from the centre to the outer edge. Casio creates the effect through a silver layer, colour coating and printed gradient pattern while keeping the dial transparent enough for solar charging. Straight hands and solid bar markers keep the displays clean. The vegetable-tanned cowhide straps come from Tochigi Leather, a Japanese maker founded in 1937 and should soften and develop a darker colour with use.

The Lighter Manta S400

The OCW-S400RL-8AJR is the smaller and more expensive model. Its titanium case measures 46.5 mm long, 41.3 mm wide and only 9.2 mm thick. Without a bracelet, the watch weighs just 38 grams. A frosted sapphire bezel ring carries world-time city codes and receives rose-gold ion plating. The dial is grey, giving the warm bezel and brown leather strap plenty of room to stand out.

A dual-curved sapphire crystal has anti-reflective coating on both sides, while titanium carbide treatment helps protect the case from scratches. Water resistance is 100 metres. Tough Solar power works with Multi-Band 6 radio reception and Bluetooth through the Casio Watches app. The app supports automatic time correction, easy settings, phone finding and watch status checks. A full charge lasts about five months without further light, or roughly 19 months with power saving. Without radio or phone correction, standard quartz accuracy is rated at ±15 seconds per month.

More Functions from the Classic Line

The green OCW-T2600RL-3AJR measures 48.2 by 42.8 by 10.7 mm and weighs 49 grams. It also has a titanium case with titanium carbide treatment, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, 100-metre water resistance and a brown Tochigi leather strap.

This model drops Bluetooth but adds a fuller analogue display. It offers world time across 29 cities and 29 time zones, UTC display, automatic summer-time adjustment, a 1/20-second stopwatch measuring up to 60 minutes and day and date displays. Multi-Band 6 keeps it accurate where compatible radio signals are available. Its full-charge figures are about five months in normal use or 22 months with power saving.

Prices and Availability

Casio plans to release both watches in Japan during August 2026. The Manta S400 is limited to 300 pieces and costs ¥165,000. Using European Central Bank reference rates from 31 July, that equals about $1,030, €897 or £767. The Classic Line T2600 is limited to 500 pieces at ¥115,500, approximately $721, €628 or £537. These are currency conversions, not official prices outside Japan and importing either model may add taxes and fees.

Conclusion

The S400 is the cleaner and lighter choice, with Bluetooth and that cool sapphire bezel. For value, I would choose the T2600. It costs less, adds world time and a stopwatch.

Casio has officially added two fresh colours to its connected ABL-100 Vintage line. The ABL-100WE-2A arrives with a dark-blue dial surround, while the ABL-100WE-7A takes the quieter route in grey. Casio’s European pages label the pair as August 2026 releases, and both are already available through the brand’s Spanish online shop. The important point is that the colours are new; the watch and its technology are familiar.

New Colours, Familiar Hardware

The dark-blue ABL-100WE-2A brings a little more contrast around the positive LCD display, but it remains restrained rather than loud. The grey ABL-100WE-7A blends more closely with the silver-tone case and bracelet. Neither version is trying to reinvent Casio’s rectangular digital formula. They simply make the connected ABL-100 easier to match with different clothes, which is often all a good colour update needs to do.

The chrome-plated resin case measures 41.6 mm long, 37.9 mm wide and only 8.2 mm thick. Weight is 60 grams, including the stainless-steel multi-row bracelet and adjustable clasp. A resin crystal covers the display. Those compact proportions should sit easily on my 6.5-inch wrist, although I have not handled either watch. Casio describes the model simply as water resistant, without advertising a swimming depth, so this is one retro accessory I would not volunteer for pool duty.

A Step Counter Wearing Vintage Clothes

An accelerometer records up to 999,999 steps and can show progress towards a daily target between 1,000 and 50,000 steps. There is also a reminder when the wearer has been sitting too long and a six-level graph for the last seven hours. The watch links to the Casio Watches app over Bluetooth, which provides automatic time correction, easier settings, life-log data, roughly 300 world-time cities and a phone finder.

Without a phone connection, Casio quotes accuracy of plus or minus 15 seconds per month. The CR2016 battery should last about two years. Other functions include dual time, a stopwatch with memory for up to 200 records, a countdown timer, five daily alarms, an amber LED backlight and a full automatic calendar through 2099. It is a surprising amount of administration for something that looks ready to file invoices in 1983.

Price and Availability

Both new references are priced at €79.90 in Casio’s Spanish store and can be added to the basket now. At the time of writing, the UK and US Casio sites do not list these exact references, so official prices in pounds and dollars have not been announced.

This is not a reason for current ABL-100 owners to replace a perfectly good watch. It is, however, a welcome choice for anyone who wants step tracking and Bluetooth without putting a small glowing rectangle of notifications on the wrist. The ABL-100 still looks wonderfully old-fashioned; it just knows rather more about your daily walk than its face admits.

Timex has given the Deepwater Meridian 200 a new job. The 42mm diver-style watch is now an automatic GMT, with a fourth hand and a bidirectional 24-hour ceramic bezel instead of a conventional elapsed-time scale. The colour references are black TW2Y63900, blue TW2Y64000 and green TW2Y64100. Black is the most restrained choice, blue has a cooler nautical character, and green brings the most personality without turning the watch into a novelty. Each version pairs its dial with a coordinating bezel, so the colour feels deliberate rather than decorative. Announced on 31 July 2026, this is genuinely new rather than a model that has quietly lived on retailers’ shelves for months. The personality is familiar, but the specification changes are enough to make this more than a new colourway.

A diver for someone who avoids deep water

I am afraid of deep water but rather fond of diver-style watches, which is a little like loving hiking while avoiding cliffs. I like their neat engineering, their tough appearance, and the fact that I can admire a 200-metre rating without personally testing it anywhere below the shallow end. Timex specifies 200 metres of water resistance, a screw-down crown, screw-on case back and a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The black dial has luminous hands and markers, a magnified date, and a red GMT hand.

The steel case is 42mm across, 14.5mm thick and 48.8mm from lug to lug. On my roughly 6.5-inch wrist, that is a size I would want to try before committing: the diameter is manageable, but the thickness gives it real presence. Its five-link bracelet has quick-release spring bars and a butterfly clasp, so the formal-looking bracelet need not be its only personality.

A GMT that moves the comparison

Timex calls the movement a 21-jewel automatic, but does not name the calibre or publish an accuracy claim. What is clear is the function: the 24-hour hand and ceramic bezel let the wearer follow a second time zone. It is useful for travel, for calling family abroad, or for checking whether your colleague is awake before sending a message marked “quick question.” The GMT hand also gives the watch a different purpose from the standard three-hand Meridian.

Seiko has a new rival

At US$549, the Timex costs only US$54 more than the US$495 Seiko 5 Sports SSK GMT. The Seiko is slimmer at 13.6mm, but has 100 metres of water resistance and a Hardlex crystal. Timex answers with sapphire, a ceramic bezel and 200 metres of water resistance. That makes the Meridian a credible Seiko alternative in my opinion.

Prices are listed at US$549, €549 and £494. Availability varies by market, with European and UK retailers currently listing the models as coming soon. The Meridian is Timex making a stronger, more capable version of a familiar Japanese tool-watch recipe. I will happily admire its 200-metre rating from a dry café, as nature intended.

In my opinion, panda watches are probably the most beautiful and classic watch designs ever made, which explains why I own around ten of them. In this article, we are looking at two models from Casio that I own: the Edifice EFB-730D-7AV on a stainless steel bracelet, that has a clean silver dial with black subdials, and the Edifice EFB-730L-7AV on a brown leather strap, but with a more vintage off-white dial and orange accents. And to make this even more interesting I will compare them with my Tudor Black Bay Chrono Panda M79360N-0002.

In the following sections, I will cover what I like, what I do not like, or rather what I would like to see in future versions, whether these watches feel premium, and two questions you probably have in mind: why I own both and whether I am going to sell them.

Panda Design, Case Size and Comfort

The panda dial is clearly the main attraction, but what makes these Casio models stand out from the many affordable panda chronographs is the shape of the case. Instead of using the familiar round design seen on watches such as the Tudor Black Bay Chrono, the EFB-730 has a tonneau shape that immediately reminded me of the legendary Zenith El Primero A384.

Introduced in 1969, the A384 combined a distinctive tonneau-shaped case (often referred to as a barrel shape) with a white dial, three black chronograph counters and a date window positioned between four and five o’clock. The modern A384 Revival faithfully recreates that design with a 37 mm tonneau case. The Edifice is larger at 40 mm, but the barrel-shaped case, panda layout, three subdials positioned at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, and even the date window placed exactly between four and five o’clock just like the Zenith, create a clear visual resemblance.

In fact, I would probably call this the best affordable alternative to the Zenith El Primero A384 on the market today. Unfortunately, I don’t actually have a Zenith lying around to do a side-by-side comparison. However, if the fine folks at Zenith happen to be reading this and want to send me an A384 to see how it stacks up against a $150 Casio, my inbox is wide open. For science, of course.

Speaking of that 40 mm case size, it hits a real sweet spot for comfort. Thanks to the tonneau shape and a 47 mm lug-to-lug distance, the watch sits securely and hugs the wrist perfectly, making it incredibly comfortable for all-day wear.

To start our comparison with the Tudor, I can honestly say that the Casio is lighter and actually more comfortable to wear. Also, the edges on the bottom of the case are smoother, making them noticeably more comfortable against the skin compared to the Tudor.

Quality – Case, Bracelet, Strap and Crystal

Speaking of quality, the execution of the case on the EFB-730 is stunning and quite unbelievable for the price point. Casio has utilized a thoughtful mix of finishes that you would typically expect on much more expensive pieces. The front of the case features a beautiful brushing that gives it a true 1970s sports watch character. This brushed surface contrasts wonderfully with the highly polished fixed bezel and the polished slab sides of the case.

Comparing this finishing to the Tudor Black Bay Chrono might sound a bit ridiculous since the Tudor costs around $6,300. Obviously, the Tudor is on another level. Its brushing is flawless and it feels exactly like a premium watch should. But honestly, the fact that a $150 Casio has good enough finishing that I’m even bringing up my Tudor is pretty wild. It really shows how much watch you are getting for your money here.

Moving on to the bracelet and strap, this is where you start to feel the price difference a bit more. The stainless steel bracelet on the EFB-730D is okay. It’s obviously far from the rock-solid, precisely engineered quality of the Tudor’s bracelet, but let’s be real, for $150, it is more than perfect. On the other hand, the EFB-730L comes on a brown leather strap. The leather quality is actually quite good and very comfortable, though I admit I would have loved to see a custom, signed Edifice buckle rather than just a standard, simple one.

If I had to recommend one over the other, I definitely recommend getting the bracelet version. As a general rule in watch collecting, it is always much easier and cheaper to swap to an aftermarket leather strap later than it is to try and track down a factory metal bracelet.

Finally, let’s talk about the crystal. Yes, the Tudor features a stunning domed sapphire crystal that creates that gorgeous vintage-style edge distortion when you view the dial from an angle. It is a beautiful effect. Unfortunately, Casio does not have this, but the fact that you get a genuine, highly scratch-resistant sapphire crystal on a $150 Casio is simply mind-blowing. Normally, at this price point, you have to settle for standard mineral glass that scratches easily. Casio throwing in a flat sapphire crystal here is a massive value for money.

Dial Quality and Details

Moving inward to the dial, the level of depth Casio achieved here is seriously impressive. The applied indexes are thick and voluminous, and when paired with the slightly recessed subdials, they give the whole face a 3D architecture that genuinely looks very premium.

The two models handle the panda aesthetic in slightly different ways. The EFB-730D-7AV (the one on the steel bracelet) features a brilliant silver sunburst finish that plays beautifully with the light. The EFB-730L-7AV (on the leather strap), however, goes with a matte, off-white vintage dial without the sunburst effect. Instead, it relies on that vibrant orange central seconds hand and the three matching orange subdial hands to make the whole design pop really nicely.

Honestly, looking at the dials side-by-side, I can sincerely say the Casio is highly comparable to the Tudor. It holds its own remarkably well. The only real giveaway is the date window cutout. On the Casio, the date wheel sits a bit deep below the dial with a straight-cut window, which can cast a slight shadow inside depending on the lighting. On the Tudor, the date wheel likely sits at a similar depth, but the dial features a beautifully chamfered (beveled) edge around the date window. This angled cut allows light to enter, eliminating the shadow entirely. But again, noticing that requires nitpicking between a $150 watch and a $6,300 premium piece!

Finally, a quick word on the lume. Casio actually provides good luminescence here, applying it to both the hour and minute hands as well as all the indices. It isn’t super bright or endlessly long-lasting like the lume on the Tudor, which is practically on another level, but again, for $150, it is more than okay.

The Movement

Let’s talk about the movement. Comparing the Casio to the Tudor here is probably useless, we are comparing a highly precise mechanical automatic movement to a standard quartz module. But instead of focusing on that, I want to tell you what I actually like and don’t like about the Casio movement.

I will start with what I don’t like: the central seconds hand. On a traditional mechanical chronograph, the large central hand is reserved for the stopwatch function and stays perfectly parked at 12 o’clock when not in use. I really love the clean look of having that hand resting constantly at the top of the dial. On this Casio, however, that central hand is just the regular running seconds hand, so it is constantly ticking away. The actual chronograph seconds hand is tucked down in the subdial at 6 o’clock.

That being said, there are some great features here that I really enjoy. First, I like that it includes a 24-hour indicator on the subdial at 3 o’clock, which is a very handy daily feature. But the coolest part is the split-time functionality. If you start the chronograph using the top pusher at 2 o’clock, you can press the bottom pusher at 4 o’clock to pause the chronograph hands. This lets you easily read the elapsed time, but the amazing part is that the mechanism continues to count silently in the background. When you press the 4 o’clock pusher again, the hands rapidly jump forward to catch up to the current elapsed time. It is a very fun and useful trick!

What I Would Like From a Future Model

If I could play watchmaker for a day, here is what I would want from a future version of this watch. First and foremost, do not touch the design, keep exactly the same dial and case shape. But under the hood, I would absolutely love to see a solar-powered, Bluetooth-connected movement. Along with that, give me a central chronograph seconds hand that sweeps smoothly like an automatic watch, rather than just ticking once per second. Finally, I would love to see a more premium stainless steel bracelet equipped with a solid, machined clasp.

Honestly, if Casio released a model with those upgrades while keeping this exact design, I would instantly buy two of them all over again. In fact, they could double the price, and I would still happily pay it.

Final Thoughts: Why I Own Both (And Will I Sell Them?)

To wrap this review up, let’s answer those questions from the beginning. First, do these watches feel premium? Honestly, yes. When you combine the brushed and polished case finishing, the deep 3D dial architecture, and that flat sapphire crystal, the EFB-730 punches way above its $150 price tag. It does not feel like a cheap watch, it feels like a proper, solid timepiece.

So, why do I own two of them? Because they offer completely different vibes on the wrist. The silver dial on the steel bracelet is my clean, versatile, everyday piece. It looks sharp and goes with almost everything. The off-white dial on the leather strap, however, is my fun, vintage-inspired weekend watch. Those orange accents give it a totally different personality. And at this price point, you can comfortably afford to have both without feeling guilty.

And finally, will I sell them? Not a chance. Even though I have a $6,300 Tudor Black Bay Chrono sitting in my watch box, these Casios still get plenty of wrist time. They are fun, they look fantastic, and they offer incredible value. They are definitely staying in the collection.
